Hours ago, the Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Multiplayer reveal trailer was uploaded. Every year the new Call of Duty multiplayer reveal is greatly anticipated and every year people expect the trailer to completely define the game that they will be playing until the next fall. Call of Duty Advanced Warfare seems to be taking a hugely different approach to the game’s multiplayer, which has been stuck in a rut of repetitive backwash for years now. Will Advanced Warfare really be different? Or is the franchise doomed to regurgitate the same product every year?

Watching Call of Duty Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer trailer I was shocked. It doesn’t look like CoD. It looks like a hybrid of several games. Player movement has been upgraded to feature double jumps, jetpacks, and parkour similar to Titanfall (no doubt out of fear of Respawn’s competing title taking over the throne). Weapons are more ridiculous and arcade-like and player movement is swift much like Quake. The maps showcased in the trailer seem to have Levolution-esque moments, taking after Battlefield 4. The finale of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare’s trailer showcases a player customization and class system that looks very similar to that of Destiny…

And of course at its core, the game is still a Call of Duty. So it does resemble its predecessors in gameplay and visuals. I think it actually looks shockingly similar to Black Ops II in design (which had the best overall look in my opinion). Call of Duty Advanced Warfare seems to be mimicking two of its biggest competitors, the supposed next big thing in gaming (Destiny), and Quake, the game in which CoD has its roots. The original Call of Duty engine was derived from Quake’s.

So, what do you think? Is this blasphemy? Is Sledgehammer a big copy cat? Or is it better to borrow from good games and create something new rather than something old and stale?

Decide for yourself and watch the trailer and let me know in the comments below:

If Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is a hit, everyone will be thanking Sledgehammer Games for reinventing the franchise (even if it is with borrowed concepts). If the game is just another CoD dud like Ghosts, we will all be blaming it for being unoriginal and lame by winter. Mark my words.
