Call of Duty Advanced Warfare already looks to be shaking up the generic CoD formula. With a drastic new setting, new movement methods, completely new storyline, this looks to be the beginning of a fresh new start for CoD.

Alongside these new features are tons of new ways to slaughter your opponent. Check out the video here.

So what do we have? We have the bog standard assault rifles, pistols and submachine guns, along with all the attachable sights we’re familiar with. But we also have a heavy weapons laser that fires continuously, scorching the wall behind enemies if you miss. We have what looks like dual miniguns attached to our soldier, becoming some sort of mobile mix between mech, man and turret. We have some sort of force-shotgun, that when coupled with cloak, provides the perfect method of ambush.

Watching the video, I can’t help but be reminded of Crysis multiplayer. With the ability to double jump, cloak and whatnot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, CoD is taking what makes other games unique (such as movement) and applying it to their own game, yet Advanced Warfarestill seems unique in itself. Call of Duty is known for having a very definitive method of play, characters always move the same way, at a certain speed, take a certain amount of hits to die etc. Because of this, nothing drastic has changed since Call of Duty 4. Mixing the gameplay up with aspects like double jumping and cloaking just adds new play styles, and provides exciting new ways to play the game. With all the new, innovative weapons too, this freshness is augmented.

All these new features actually make me excited for Advanced Warfare. Games like Black Ops weren’t significantly different enough (for me) to warrant a new game, yet Advanced Warfare seems to be adding so much more, yet still retaining what makes Call of Duty games fun and exhilarating to play. Maybe Activision have listened to the fans, and finally learned that rehashing the same formula over and over again isn’t the best way to please them.

What do you guys think? Is Advanced Warfare different enough for you guys? Or do you think it’s still just another generic CoD game being created to empty our wallets?
