COD: Advanced Warfare’s Tech Isn’t Sci-Fi, Developer Says

Sledgehammer Games, the developer behind Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, explains that despite the futuristic technology of the game, none of it is science fiction. Advanced Warfare is set in 2054, with Private Military Corporations that fit their soldiers with powered exoskeletons and other gadgets. The reveal trailer for the game shows a lot of amazing tech, including hoverbikes, a spider tank, and what looks like a rail gun at some point. However, Sledgehammer claims that this is more grounded in reality than we think.

Speaking to Gameinformer, Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey said that “I think Call of Duty resonates because it’s believable and relatable. It’s always been one of the strengths of the franchise.” Most Call of Duty campaigns tend to be over the top and feature a lot of weaponry and technology that seems like it’s from the near future, but are still within the realm of possibility. Call of Duty: Ghosts’ missiles from space sounds like a sci-fi movie device, but the concept of kinetic bombardment is actually an old military program. Condrey in-fact mentioned that the technology in the real world was  “more fantastic than even the things that we were coming up with.” Due to the emphasis on a believable world, Condrey stresses that “It’s not that fictional leap to a science fiction world you can’t relate to,” referring to Advanced Warfare.

It will be interesting to see what other technology will appear in Advanced Warfare, aside from what we’ve seen in the trailer. So far, we’ve been shown active camouflage, hoverbikes, exo suits, wall climbing gloves and more. There’s bound to be more to see and we’ll witness them all when the game drops on November 4.
