Comparing the HTC Desire 816 vs HTC Desire 816G

Launched in India in late September, the HTC Desire 816G is priced at a modest price at $309. It is much cheaper than their HTC Desire 816 variant which while it is identical, the differences lie in their features and specs each offer.

Designs

On the outside, both HTC Desires look similar if not the same. They each have a glossy plastic body that has a rear panel that is non-removable, and matte appearance on the sides that resemble rubber. It is a comfortable solid phone that from time to time must be wiped due to its propensity of fingerprints on its back panel. The massive Super LCD2 5.5 inch display is hoisted on the front panel, and on the top and above sit its stereo speakers.

The display provides as 720 x 1280 pixel resolution, with 267 ppi pixel density. The devices offer the same dimensions of 156.6 x 78.9 length and width, with the 816G being .1mm thicker than the 816. In terms of weight, the 816 is heavier at 165grams, and the 816G being a light 158 grams.

Hardware

Both devices are powered by a Qualcomm MSM8928 Snapdragon 400 chipset coupled with the quad-core Cortex-A7 processor and supported by the Adreno 305 GPU. The differences are in the speed as the 816G has a slower speed on 1GB of Ram with only 1.3GHz. However, the 816 variant has 1.5GB of RAM on 1.6GHz of speed.

The devices offer 8GB of internal memory storage, with the 816G supporting expandable memory of up to 32GB, and the Desire 816 expandable up to 128GB.

They provide their Sense UI coupled with the Android KitKat v4.4.2 operating systems.

Cameras

The devices offer the same 13MP rear camera with features such as simultaneous HD image and video recording, geotagging, HDR, face detection, autofocus, and LED flash. It also is capable of recording 1080p@30fps and 720p@60fps videos. Their front camera offers 5MP of resolution for a selfie friendly, and video calling phone.

Batteries

The batteries on both phones are at 2600mAh capacity, with 816 providing up to 21 hours of talk time, an impressive 11 hours more than the 816G.

Connectivity

Both devices have support of microUSB v2.0, GPS, Bluetooth v4.0, WiFi hotspot, WiFi 802..11 b/g/n and Desire 816 providing NFC optional support. Desire 816G provides a HSDPA network support for 21Mbps speeds, and Desire 816 supporting up to 42 Mbps speeds.

Prices

The devices costs around the same amount, which both can be found on the Indian Market for around $300, and the Desire 816 will be around $15 more.
