These days, the worldwide web seems to be entangling more and more aspects of our lives. Knowing that, it is not surprising that various companies have embraced the internet themselves. They are conducting job interviews using Skype or similar voice calling app. The reasons for doing that may vary depending on the company but what it does is it provides the biggest advantage to their applicants. If you have been invited to an interview over Skype, you do not have to worry about being late or spending money in order to get to the company’s office and so on. Another advantage that is given to you is that you will be in your home during the interview (a place that you are, hopefully, most comfortable in).
However, this method of conducting an interview does have its cons, too. For example, you might not be able to convince your potential employer that you are prepared for the whole process and he won’t be wasting time with you. In order to avoid that, you will need to keep some things in mind.
- Dress properly!
While you are in your comfort zone, do not forget that the first impression is very important for those conducting the whole process. You have to be dressed like a professional; just you would if you were doing a regular interview. This includes your lower half too! You never know when you might stand up during the interview.
- Do not panic if something goes wrong on the technical side of things
This is a serious potential disadvantage that can have drastic effects on the outcome of your interview. Of course, there is always a risk of Skype going crazy or your internet shutting down, etc. However, you should eliminate any potential problems from your side and make sure you haven’t missed a thing. If something still goes wrong, the last thing you want to do is yell at your monitor, cursing all of this fancy new technology. Just stay calm and try to explain the situation. You could also make an apology for all the inconvenience it may have caused.
- Check the space behind you and readjust your camera/ position as necessary
There are numerous funny photos on the internet that capture people that try to look serious, yet have some ridiculous background behind them. You do not want to be one of those guys. In case you are doing the interview in an office or some other public place, make sure that you are isolated and there won’t be any interruptions (such as someone yelling or going through the Skype frame).
- Try to find a perfect balance between being confident and humble
This is more of an advice for life in general. However, it still works in terms of interview process. People like personalities that come off as confident, yet not cocky. Also, keep in mind that Skype interviews are usually less formal than the normal ones. However, this does not mean that your potential employer is now your BFF.
