For years and years, the hope of a Final Fantasy VII remake has grew and grew, however the reality is that it most likely won’t happen due to Square Enix being preoccupied with other projects. Although it’s become apparent another developer besides Square could handle a remake of the 1997 PlayStation classic, that developer being CyberConnect2, perhaps best known for the .Hack and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja franchises.
When asked in an interview on his work preferences for the future, president of CyberConnect2; Hiroshi Matsuyama said:
“For now I’m really dedicated to adaptations of Naruto and JJBA. Working on a new project requires more time as was the case. The .Hacks came out of the minds of teams at CyberConnect2. However, if I have to work on another project I’d like to work on a possible remake of Final Fantasy VII.”
CyberConnect2 are working on Final Fantasy VII G-Bike for iOS and Android devices. The game is based on a mini-game within the original Final Fantasy VII, in which players took control of Cloud Strife as he had to fend of oncoming enemies using that gigantic sword of his. It was also available to play for fun at the Gold Saucer.
Clearly showing a keen interest in Final Fantasy VII, there’s still a glimmer of hope out there for an official remake, but don’t hold your breathe.
