As of writing this, tomorrow will be the second installment of the Dark Souls 2 DLC, Crown of the Old Iron King. So what can we expect from this? Note, that this post will contain spoilers, FROM Software rolled out a 1gb patch in preparation for the launch of this DLC, because of this, hackers have been able to access weapons and armour from the unreleased DLC.
We’ll start with the map itself. This DLC is set in Brume Tower, a tower not so far away from the Iron Keep. Through the videos we’ve seen, we’ve traversed giant chains heading from one tower to the other, we’ve seen massive lava pits and deadly traps. All in all, the setting doesn’t seem too different from what we’ve seen in Iron Keep. This may be a bummer for some, Crown of the Sunken King took us to an entirely different setting, whereas this second DLC isn’t that noticeably different. However, if FROM have learned anything from the praise of the level design of the first DLC, they would’ve taken that into account for the second.
As for the enemies, we’ve seen giant axe wielding soldiers (which honestly, don’t look too difficult to beat) and Hollows which carry explosive barrels on their back. Unless you want to be blown to smithereens, it’s best to take these enemies out from afar. Additionally, there seem to be a lot more ranged enemies this time around, so carrying some sort of bow or catalyst would help significantly in beating this DLC.
Item wise, major spoilers ahead! We have a greatsword with the same moveset that Artorias used in Dark Souls 1, a hammer named the Smelter Hammer (which requires a whopping 70 strength to one hand!) and a massive Alonne Sword. Several pyromancies and sorceries have also been added, one pyromancy seems to be the same as the one taken out of the Dark Souls 2 Beta. Most interestingly though is the addition of Raime’s armour (one of King Vendrick’s right hand men). Will we learn more about Raime’s lore in this DLC? Well, we’ll find out tomorrow!
Check back in a couple of days for a full review of this DLC, I’m sure as hell excited for this and cannot wait for its release.
