Destiny - The Dark Below Fan Outrage Paywall

Destiny‘s new DLC, The Dark Below, has recently gone live, and already fans are in an outrage regarding the expansion’s supposed content “paywalling.”

According to reports by Destiny fans on both /r/Games and /r/DestinyTheGame, Bungie has made older content previously available to all owners of the game only accessible by those who have purchased The Dark Below.

Fans In An Outrage towards Destiny‘s New DLC

Destiny The Dark Below Fan Outrage

Apparently, judging by reports from fans who have been playing The Dark Below, Bungie has moved the ability to do weekly strikes and Nightfall missions, which was previously accessible by everyone that owned Destiny, to only those that own the game’s new DLC expansion.

This week’s weekly strike and Nightfall mission are based on a new dungeon only available to owners of The Dark Below, effectively alienating gamers that didn’t purchase that game (i.e. paywalling).

Furthermore, Bungie shifted the engram bonus out of the normal playlist, moving to the The Dark Below‘s exclusive playlist, once again leaving gamers that don’t own Destiny‘s new DLC with very little to do, alongside hindering both their ability to obtain engrams and general item progression.

Naturally, many gamers are quite frustrated with The Dark Below‘s changes, with some holding off from purchasing Destiny‘s new DLC until further explanation is given by Bungie.

“Normally, I would chalk it up to random luck with the DLC mission happen to falling in line with the Nightfall/Weekly because it rotates every week…but this reeks of Activision money grabbing. The engram movement from an all inclusive playlist to the DLC-only playlist just doubles down on my feelings towards the matter.

No word from Bungie yet from I can find on their Twitter or Forums. I own Destiny myself and am holding off on buying the DLC until I see some clarity on this matter. It’s bullshit, at least to me, that I cannot do the Nightfall or Weekly with my friends because they did not want to purchase the DLC.”

This article will be updated should new, official information from Bungie or Activision arise.
