According to Wedbush analyst, Michael Pachter, the sales figures of Bungie’s latest online-focused first-person shooter – Destiny, the most pre-ordered new intellectual property in gaming history – cannot compare to last year’s big September blockbuster – Grand Theft Auto V.
GTA 5 set astounding sales records in 2013, with Take-Two Interactive announcing that the game had made over $800 million on day 1 and over $1 billion dollars for the first 3 days of its release (in retail sell-through, which is direct sales to consumers).
In comparison, Destiny had a sell-through of $325 million within the first 5 days of its official release on September 9th.

“Destiny is no GTA”
Pachter had the following to say in regards to Destiny‘s sitting sales figures as compared to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V:
“Last September, Take-Two announced worldwide retail sell-through [sales to consumers] for [GTA 5] of over $800 million on day one and over $1 billion for the first three days. [Those are] both industry records.
This September’s biggest release, Activision Blizzard’s Destiny, had day one sell-in to retailers of over $500 million, a record for a new franchise, with sell-through to consumers of over $325 million in its first five days.”
The analyst also laid out his predicted expectations of where Destiny‘s sales will sit for September’s NPD report, stating:
“We estimate Destiny’s NPD unit sales figures for September will be 2.75 million units. That’s well below Grand Theft Auto V’s roughly 7 million units last year.”
Ultimately, the Wedbush analyst is estimating that Destiny will sell approximately 4.25 million less units in September of 2014 than Grand Theft Auto V did in September of 2013.
In related news, Pachter estimates that September 2014’s NPD revenue figures are at $435 million dollars, considerably less than last September’s figure of $754 million dollars.
What are your thoughts on this? Why do you think that Destiny is not selling as well as last year’s GTA 5, despite being the most pre-ordered IP ever? Is it due to the fact that it is a new IP, and not an established, successful franchise like GTA? Or is it due to something else, possibly review score-related?
