A lot of people gathered to play the Destiny Beta this past weekend. In fact, 4.6 million players gathered to play the Destiny Beta. The Beta started on July 17th exclusively to PS3 and PS4 users while Xbox One and Xbox 360 users got to play the Beta the following week. It closed on Sunday to amass exactly 4,638,937 players online to play the game.
Not only is that a very large number, it’s record breaking. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said that “This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin” and that Destiny “was the largest console beta for a new video game IP to date.” Bungie COO Pete Parsons said “blown away” by the turn out of the Beta. Breaking records is definitely a feat to be “blown away” by.
The makers of the Halo franchise certainly got their hands on a potentially popular game, especially with the massive turnout of gamers for their Beta. Some were disappointed by the Beta, considering there wasn’t enough gameplay to really consider it a game, which then lead to assumptions such as how big the game will be/level cap. Hopefully the full release of the game will only make the Beta seem like a smidgen of the game. In all honesty, the Beta was meant to be a little taste of the game, to see if the game will run properly. That’s what Beta’s are for. Some gamers don’t seem to take into account that fact, that this was nowhere near a completed game and was meant for Destiny to show a little taste of what’s to come as well as fix any bugs before launch.
Even with the types of gamers there are, there is still a massive community willing to support this game and Pete Parsons was nothing but thankful for all those that participated. Activision is hoping to make Destiny a massive franchise, just like it has done with Skylanders and Call of Duty. We’ll see how it turns out and if it’ll go in that direction.
Destiny is launching on September 9th for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, and PS3. There is no confirmation on a PC Version, but it seems like a “natural fit” for the game to come to PC’s.
