Bioware’s highly anticipated role-playing game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, is going to have a multiplayer component, but it’s not what you may think.
Following in the footsteps of Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Unity, the latest entry into the Dragon Age series is going to have cooperative multiplayer. So no, you can’t engage in tactical combat with your friends or players across the globe, but you can team up and scour Ferelden for precious loot.
Gaming site, IGN, was the first to reveal the news in an exclusive hands-on session with Inquisition. Apparently, it is similar to Mass Effect 3‘s multiplayer offering, but is “significantly deeper.”
Dragon Age: Inquisition Cooperative Multiplayer Details
As a direct foil to its reportedly 200-hour long single-player campaign, Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s multiplayer sessions will only take about half an hour to complete. Interestingly enough, the levels will be randomly generated maps divided up into smaller areas. Bioware has stated that there will be nine playable characters, with three characters allotted to three different class types. The classes follow the traditional RPG archetypes: melee warrior, mage, and ranged archer. Each character (and their respective class) will play a vital role in their party, and, in a curious twist, certain parts of the map can only be accessed if a specific class type is present.
Rewards for completing a co-op level include gold, which is used to buy treasure chests, which contain all sorts of loots sure to please even the most jaded of RPG fans. Loot will consist of usable items, various armor types, and even new character skins. Unfortunately, there will also be a microtransaction system where players who don’t want to grind for loot (why are you even playing an RPG?) can pay real money to buy “platinum,” which can be used to purchase the aforementioned treasure chests. However, Bioware has stated this system will be entirely optional, and that nothing is unattainable through normal gameplay.
As expected, Bioware will offer DLC, consisting of new levels and characters, catered to players who enjoy the cooperative multiplayer mode. The good news is that the content will be free for everyone.
More information is sure to come up closer to the game’s release. Dragon Age: Inquisition is set to release on November 18th for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.
