DreamHack Protests Against Net Neutrality

by GH Staff

DreamHack is the world’s largest gaming computer festival, thousands of gamers gather together twice a year in Sweden to join in the live concerts, competitions and LAN Events hosted there, it’s a time-honored tradition and an ever growing event.

DreamHack Stage (Winter 2010)

However this year’s DreamHack event (2014) has caused quite a stir amongst the gaming community and the internet, with the release of a recording taken from the stage of DreamHack showing gamers “Booing” in response to the recent “Net-Neutrality” terms and plans, the man who spear-head this reaction is known as “Athene” or “Bachir Boumaaza” he is a famously well-known and (mostly) well respected member of the gaming community, and has been featured in talk shows and news-reports around the globe for his Charity work with Gaming For Good and Save The Children.

World Famous Gamer “Athene” Has Raised Millions of Dollars For Charity

For those of you who are unaware, Net-Neutrality by definition is keeping internet traffic “Equal” which ideally would be fair and just to all internet users, however lately ISP (Internet Service Providers) have been using the Net-Neutrality debate to throttle certain services such as Netflix, YouTube and Gaming Services and Servers and instead offer you a “Increased Payment Option” to re-open your access to these services and sites. What this means in an example is that You could be forced to pay $50 more per month for Unlimited Netflix Speed ON-TOP of your Netflix subscription just to watch the shows and movies you’re already paying for.

Now this is not my opinion and this article is not a way for me to “Shout-out amongst the crowd” this is purely based of the Internets reaction to Net-Neutrality and with the recent response from DreamHack having thousands of gamers shouting “No To Net-Neutrality!“ it’s no surprise that someone finally took a chance and stood up to the ISP.

Net-Neutrality Protests Outside The FCC

While Athene may have kicked off a reaction, he is not alone, many other famous internet icons have all had their say against Net-Neutrality and have hosted numerous events to raise awareness and protest against the idea of Net-Neutrality, and personally I feel it won’t be long now before the ISP begin to make a response to the backlash.
