Rumors made by people through the internet that stated that Dropbox, a famous file hosting service, has been hacked and that user information has been leaked to the public, are told to be false and plainly untrue as posted by the company involved.
The gossip about it all started when a list of usernames and passwords have been published in the internet. This, for many people, is already considered proof and it made the hearsay more believable. The release of this certain list is what provoked many users to modify their passwords, but Dropbox now lets the public know that as they have checked the list, they have seen no connection with the accounts of their users.
Furthermore, in accordance to what Dropbox has said, the list of usernames and passwords were most probably stolen from a different service, and the people who saw this information used the data on the list to try and log in to other services like their company, and since some people use the same information on some of their different accounts, and got in successfully. In the post that the company has made, it is stated that they have already applied certain measures in place to be able to see if there are any suspicious activity on accounts and if the time comes that there are, the passwords of those accounts will immediately be reset.
A reminder for all people, when you are creating an account, be sure that the account information you will put, like your username and/ or password would be different. This is to make sure that you will stay protected even if one of your accounts have been entered without permission, or otherwise hacked. Also, it is optional but highly recommended to always use the 2 step verification feature.
Some other time before this rumor came out, another allegation was made by Edward Snowden, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent, as he said, in an interview with Techcrunch, that users should remove and get rid of the application in subject. This is, according to Snowden, due to the fact that the service does not offer any encryption code. This accusation has only been ignored by the company of Dropbox as they focus more on giving safe and better service to the consumers that entrust their information to them.
