Epic Games have released a short video (see below) of themselves playing a game of deathmatch on what looks to be a very early build of the game, featuring a small closed off map with little visual detail. We are able to see basic movement as well as the famous Shock Rifle making an appearance. It was recently revealed that the game will be completely free to play, and no microtransaction options will be included what so ever. Future updates to the game after release will also be free to download.
The game will be available on Windows, Mac, and Linux – nothing has been mentioned regarding a console release but keep in mind the original Unreal Tournament was ported to PS2 and Dreamcast, then Unreal Tournament 3 was released on both PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2007. As with previous series entries, the new Unreal Tournament will fully support the use of modding, whether it’s weapons, maps, total-conversions, and so forth. Although there is no official release date as of yet, the game will primarily focus on the deathmatch mode initially, and then other modes will eventually be added such as Capture the Flag – a staple gametype in the franchise.
Stacey Conley, community manager for Epic Games, said “we’ll be getting the game out to everybody soon, and we’re really excited.” – this could mean a demo will be available in the not too distant future or perhaps a beta. But for now, enjoy the development team fragging each other to death.
