Major League Gaming, the international leader on eSports, is building its first-ever arena on Hengqin Island, China. The massive arena is set to hold up to 15,000 eSport spectators and will be built by a collaboration of MLG, Lai Fung Holdings Limited, and eSun Holdings Limited.

Hengqin Island is located off the coast of Macau, and is looking to become a tourist area that will feature many recreational and entertaining activities. One of the biggest plans for the island is the “V-Zone,” a one of its kind video game destination that seeks to become a centerpiece of Lai Fung’s Renminbi“Creative Culture City” project. Hengqin Creative Culture City will be the first place in both China and the world that will serve as a permanent video game tourist attraction. The MLG Gaming Arena, which is slated to be fully operational in 2017, will be just one of the planned things for the island.

“This development on Hengquin Island is a true stadium and the first of its kind”, said Mike Sepso, president and co-founder of MLG in an interview with onGamers. “This is a massive development in one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Additionally, the China gaming market is enormous and the fastest growing on earth. The anticipated launch of the MLG Arena in 2017 will give MLG a very strong foothold in that market, but also a marquis travel destination to showcase eSports at the highest level.”

The V-Zone is a big deal for China, as the country as become on of the largest markets for online gaming. According to the Major League Gaming website, China has the largest online user base in the entire world. The addition of the V-Zone and the new gaming arena to China’s Hengqin Island will solidly secure China’s reign of the online gaming usership and market.

Major League Gaming has also completed other international expansions this year, including one in Brazil. While they didn’t build an arena there, they are currently working on bringing more online gaming and eSports to the South American country.
