To this day, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 still hold their own in terms of visuals. Sure, the first Mass Effect is a bit dusty by today’s standards, but still looks reasonably good. Visuals won’t be an issue with Mass Effect 4 either, as Bioware is using the potent Frostbite 3 engine to bring the galaxy to life. It’s the same engine they are using in the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition, and based on Inquisition’s latest trailer, the engine is extremely capable. It’s unclear what platforms Mass Effect 4 is being developed for, but it’s most likely to be next-gen focused, meaning the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 might not be getting their own versions. While this is bad news for past-gen console owners, it’s good news for those that expect the game to look stunning. Lack of past-gen support usually translates into more complex graphics that simply cannot be tuned-down enough for the limited capabilities of the older hardware.

There’s no official release date for Mass Effect 4 as of yet. It’s clear that the game won’t be coming out this year. In fact, Dragon Age: Inquisition is coming out in Fall 2014, and that particular game is way ahead in terms of development. Still, expecting Mass Effect 4 in 2015 (summer-fall) is a reasonable estimation. More light will surely be shed on the matter at this year’s E3, where Mass Effect 4’s first trailer will most likely be revealed. We know that the trailer is already in the works, which is definitely a good sign.

As far as what platforms will be receiving Mass Effect 4, it’s safe to assume that the PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One will each get their own versions. Dragon Age: Inquisition is already coming to next-gen consoles, and Bioware is referring to the game as their first truly next-gen project, as well as their “most ambitious game to date”. This direction will surely be kept for Mass Effect 4 too, so there are certainly multiple reasons to keep an eye on the competent studio and the upcoming AAA game.
When more information will be revealed, we’ll be sure to let you guys know. And while we’re waiting, we’d love to hear your thoughts on Mass Effect 4, and what you guys are expecting from the game.
