It’s a secret to no one that former supporters of the Oculus Rift are now upset over the recent Oculus acquisition by Facebook. Gamers and developers alike have been in an uproar for the past days since the announcement. Now, investors in Facebook are crying as their shares in stock have dropped by 7 percent to $60.38, a drop of $4.51.
This entire situation has caused major controversy within the industry with consumers and developers taking sides as they stand to either defend or assault the new acquisition. Backers of the Oculus Kickstarter from 2012 have gone so far to demand refunds out of anger claiming that “Oculus has sold out and lost its original vision”. Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has already pulled the plug on a plan to release Minecraft on the Oculus Rift because “Facebook creeps him out”.
Personally, I’m going to sit back and see how this unfolds. I believe it’s too soon to make a judgement as we’ve yet to see how Facebook truly plans on using the Oculus Rift. Facebook CEO and the leaders of Oculus claim their partnership will be around for a long time, so it’s only fair we give them a shot. What are your thoughts? Do you think Facebook can recover from this major blow of hate and criticism? Or will haters soon bite their tongue and be satisfied by what they have to offer for the future?
