2.1 stable arrives two years after Space Age
Wube Software has marked Factorio 2.1 as stable in Friday Facts #449. The update lands two years to the week after Space Age released, and the team frames it as the last major feature update in the current cycle. Factorio’s feature set is now complete, and Wube is shifting to long term support, which means bug fixes, platform support, and modding compatibility. The changes in 2.1 are the final shape of the game for players who stayed on 2.0 stable.
2.1 brings quality of life changes, small features, polish, and work that did not fit into 2.0. Players who never left 2.0 stable get the full tour of what changed during the experimental period, while the stable label is the point where Wube commits to supporting this version without another major feature drop on the horizon.
Space logistics rework removes the biggest tedium
Space platforms become automatable in 2.1. Mixed rockets let a single launch carry multiple different items, so no more sending a full stack of everything just to build a small platform. Import from Any leaves the Import from slot blank to pull fuel, ammo, and repair packs from all locations. Platform to platform transfers let one platform provide items to another in orbit. Hub set requests let the circuit network control the space platform hub. Radar Universe mode sends and receives circuit signals between planets and platforms on a shared channel.
Space platforms shift from one-off builds fed by overstuffed single-item rockets to a multi-platform supply network. In 2.0, a small construction order often meant launching thousands of unnecessary items because rockets were single-item. That wasted rocket parts and forced players to buffer cargo in orbit. Now a platform can request exactly what it needs from any source, including another platform, and the circuit network can adjust those requests based on conditions. The orbital layer gains requesters, providers, and shared signal channels, which cuts the constant manual fiddling that made Space Age space logistics feel like a chore.
Platform balance and landing pad changes end the pencil ship meta
Asteroid damage now depends on the asteroid’s remaining health instead of its speed, so hits are much more predictable. The space platform hub has more health and resistances, so it can take a few more hits before failing. Platform drag is now based on mass instead of width, which kills the pencil ship speed meta. Under 2.0, players built extremely narrow, long platforms to reduce width-based drag and gain speed. Now a wide platform with the same mass has the same drag, so there is no reason to favor an unnatural pencil shape for performance.
The landing pad unloading bay is a special cargo bay that inserters can take items out of. It can be placed in a limited area around the landing pad, and elevated rails can now be built over cargo bays. Instead of unloading the landing pad into a hand-fed buffer chest and then moving items to trains or belts, inserters can pull from the unloading bay straight into a rail wagon, a belt, or a chest. Cargo can flow from the landing pad into ground logistics without a manual intermediate step. That removes a persistent bottleneck for high-throughput bases and turns the landing pad into a train station interface.
Quality becomes opt-in, and the space casino closes
Space Age can now be played without Quality. Wube has split the Recycler into its own mod, and Quality is a recommended dependency enabled by default. Quality modules can no longer be used in asteroid reprocessing. Quality stops being a forced mechanic, since players who do not want to engage with quality cycling can disable the dependency and play Space Age with ordinary item tiers. The Recycler, previously a core part of the quality upcycling loop, is no longer mandatory for the expansion, so engaging with Quality becomes a deliberate choice. The infinite asteroid-reprocessing exploit known as the space casino is also closed. That loop let players run asteroid chunks through reprocessing with quality modules to generate unlimited free quality rolls. Removing quality modules from reprocessing eliminates that exploit without changing the rest of the Quality system.
Quality locomotives and wagons now provide faster trains and larger cargo and fluid wagons. The transport bonus stays optional, since the whole Quality dependency can be turned off. Bases built around the space casino break with this update. The change restores the intended cost of quality upgrades for everyone else.
ARM64 Linux support expands native hardware options
Factorio now runs natively on ARM64 Linux. Wube lists Steam Frame, Raspberry Pi headless servers, Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon MacBooks, the free Oracle VPS some players have claimed, and other assorted hardware as supported targets. For self-hosted multiplayer, cheap ARM boards become viable headless server hosts without emulation overhead. A Raspberry Pi can now run a dedicated Factorio server continuously without the performance penalty of x86 translation. Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon gives Mac users a native Linux path for the game. Valve’s Lepton and FEX ARM translation work and the broader Steam Frame support expansion get another native title.
What is confirmed and what requires action
Wube confirms that 2.0 save games will load in 2.1. Some changes, such as the circuit Input/Output split, may break existing factory designs. Once you update, blueprints and save games cannot be downgraded to 2.0. The team recommends backing up any saves and blueprints you care about, and updating a copy rather than your only world if a critical mod has not been updated yet. Most popular mods have been updated during the experimental period, but some mods may not be ready yet.
