Nobody likes a monopoly. Thankfully, we don’t have one in the mobile industry, at least not when it comes to IM and VoIP apps. And while WhatsApp is apparently dominating mobile communication, let’s not be quick to shun Viber. This purple-themed app has a lot going for it, and could arguably be named the best VoIP app for mobile devices. At the very least, it’s up there with the best of them.
If you haven’t done so yet, grab a Viber free download from the App-Store or Google Play Store, and see why WhatsApp isn’t the only powerful IM app out there.

When it comes to the core functionality, both applications deliver a great instant messaging service that lets you easily connect with your friends. However, they both have different features that make them unique and stand out from the crowd of instant messaging applications. Viber offers a VoIP support letting you easily connect with everyone around the world and make free of charge calls to your friends wherever they are in the world as long as you have internet connection on your phone. Even though both apps are easy to set up and use, WhatsApp lets you send voice messages and media files making the conversation funny and exciting.

Originally being developed and later released by two friends from the Israel Defense Forces Talmon Marco and Igor Megzinik many people had concern in the Arab world that Viber is used as a spying platform. However, as it came to light that the application was actually funded by friends and family of the two israeli, it turned out that it had nothing to do with the state of Israel. Viber has also proven to offer a safe and secure way of communication able to keep user sensitive information intact by hacker attacks.
On the other hand, there have been major privacy concerns when it comes to the WhatsApp protocols. To let you easily find people, the application makes a mirror image of your contacts lists and information about them on their service and lets you know who of them uses the instant messager. However, as this user sensitive information was stored in an insecure way, major concern has risen that many could access it.

Although pretty similar, both of the instant messaging applications stand out in different ways that makes them unique. However, as WhatsApp has been acquired by Facebook and more light has been shed to its privacy and business model problems more people are switching to the safer and more secure Viber application that also lets you call anyone in the world that uses it completely free of charge. What application do you use to connect with your friends?
