Game Soundtrack Stereotypes and Patterns…Sounds Familiar?

Game Soundtrack Stereotypes and Patterns...Sound Familiar?

Though it’s usually not a large reason behind a game’s purchase, a game’s soundtrack can play a crucial role in the storytelling process.  Though most OSTs go unnoticed by the vast amount of players, I’d posit that good or bad music can make or break a game, whether its setting the mood for an environment or creating an attitude for adventure.

Its dangerous to go alone. Take this guitar.

With that in mind, I couldn’t help but be surprised when I began noticing (from time to time) patterns in the way music is used within games.   The following short list of game soundtrack stereotypes and patterns are by no means the result of a scientific process (most come from engagement with various forums), but I do think it would be interesting to dip the metaphorical toe in the water and start this discussion!

1.  The music that plays during the battle with a “boss” or “final boss” is a remix of the game’s primary or early theme song.

Examples:

Pokemon White & Black (You should know the primary by heart)

Trauma Center Second Opinion – Primary Theme – Last Level Theme

Sonic Colors – Primary Theme – Final Boss Theme

La-Mulana – Early Theme – Final Boss Theme

2. The music that plays during the battle with the “final boss” is remix compilation of all the prior “boss” soundtracks.

Examples:

Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland – Boss Tower

(Also relevant: Final Fantasy’s Serpent Eating the Ground)

3. The “final boss” music has chanting in it, usually in a non-existent language made just for the game.

Example:

Monster Hunter Tri – Final Boss Theme

(Also check out: Star Wars Republic Command0 – Vode An)

4.  The “final boss” music starts off slowly, or with a chorus, and then suddenly erupts into guitar rifts and synthesizers.

Example:

Hellsinker BGM – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9cEPUOV-GQ (excuse the URL, I’ve hit my link limit!)
