Gears Of War fans gathered on Twitch last night for a special streaming event featuring Rod Fergusson, who is leading development for the newest Gears Of War title coming to Xbox One. Fergusson discussed the development of the newest title and showed a (rather blurry) picture of some concept art.

Gears Of War

The Microsoft acquisition of Gears Of War has only been since January, so Fergusson wouldn’t say much regarding the game. “This isn’t going to be the place where I can announce the name of the next game and all these sorts of things.” He says.” Obviously, it’s going to take some time to get to a point where we can do so.” Fergusson also discussed the challenges faced with creating the new Black Tusk Studios and working on a major franchise such as Gears Of War. Fergusson is no stranger to the Gears Of Wars series however, as he was the director for the first three titles. He claims that by Microsoft now owning the IP, that there is much bigger support available to the team and that they can “push a lot harder in many major areas”.

Fergusson sounded optimistic when speaking about having a brand new team to work with on the Gears Of War series. He says the team he’s assembled is new to the series and will allow a fresh set of eyes to look at the series and help deliver new innovations.  Fergusson stated “After you’ve made the same game for seven years, it’s a little bit harder, like ‘how do I make it different?’ And I think you might have picked up a little of that out of Gears of War Judgement”. He claims that Black Tusk brings “raw enthusiasm” with passion and energy.

While nothing was stated specifically regarding multiplayer for the next Gears title, Fergusson went on to mention his thoughts on what should be included to create a good experience. He compared Gears to Call Of Duty, saying that “(While playing Call of Duty) I feel like an individual. I have my own goals to accomplish such as unlocking red laser-sight or what have you, but i’m not really caring about the results of the match or the well-being of my team. In Gears Of War you feel a sense of accountability, that when you die you know I’ve left my team a man short.” Therefore we can rest easy knowing that the Gears Of War multiplayer aspect shouldn’t change drastically or look to clone other Fisrt Person Shooters.

Microsoft plans on announcing new games and new sequels at this year’s E3, so it’s safe to be on the lookout for some Gears of War announcements. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rod Fergusson himself takes the stage. Microsoft’s E3 conference is slated for June 9th, and you can be sure we will be covering all the latest news and topics.
