H.R. Giger, the man behind the Xenomorph, has passed away. The celebrated Swiss designer is commonly known as the brain behind one of the most sinister creatures to crawl out of primordial soup. However, Giger’s prolific career certainly isn’t limited to Alien. In addition to the Alien franchise, Giger lent his talents to a portrayal of Frank Herbert’s Dune, an adaptation significantly better than David Lynch’s ill-fated project. Apparently Giger also dabbled in video games, influencing Dark Seed and Dark Seed II.
Yet though the surrealist artist is no longer, his legacy lives on not only in his past works, but also the forthcoming Alien: Isolation. The upcoming promises a hearty dose of Xenomorph awesomeness as well as survival horror. While it’s generating quite a bit of excitement, Alien: Isolation isn’t the first Alien video game adaptation. The first Alien game dates back to the Atari 2600, though it’s resemblance to the actual film is questionable. Recent titles such as Alien Trilogy and Alien Resurrection more appropriately conveyed the Alien universe, though both releases were essentially Doom clones. Considering how lovably enjoyable Doom is, that’s not necessarily a complaint.
The massively hyped Aliens: Colonial Marines debuted in 2013 to universal disappointment. Largely considered the Alien: Resurrection of Alien video games, the screams were rather audible because, well, we’re not in space. Poised to redeem the Alien game scene, much as Prometheus saved the cinematic universe, Alien: Isolation releases this Fall. If the trailer is any indication of the goodies to come, gamers and Alien fans ought to rejoice. Graphically beautiful, and seemingly faithful to lore (they even included that weird dunking bird contraption), this could be the Alien game we’ve all been waiting for. Excited for Alien: Isolation?
