Half Life 3 will not be coming any time soon

by GH Staff

It’s no secret that Valve head Gabe Newell had a public AMA on Reddit last week. While Gabe was kind enough to answer some very interesting questions, there was no indication of Valve potentially working on Half Life 3. In fact, no answers were given about any specific Valve games at all. A Reddit user asked Mr. Newell about Ricochet 2, but the answer he received, while diplomatic and plausible, did not shed too much light on things:

Gabe Newell AMA2

The same goes for Half Life 3. Yes, the community was anxious to see any hint about a possible development plan or even a possible release date, but alas, this did not happen. Gabe Newell’s reasoning seems logical enough, and if there actually is a Half Life 3 in the works, it’s not going to be announced until it’s in an advanced enough state. Delivering on time seems to be a high priority for Valve, and while this is a noble sentiment, we would have loved to see something that could at least feed the hope. At least we got to find out that a Linux version for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will be coming, which is not surprising, given Valve’s focus on SteamOS and Steam Machines this year.

Gabe Newell AMA

We combed through every post and answer, hoping to find any hints of Half Life 3, but we’ve come up short. However, the AMA is definitely an interesting read, and you can find out a lot about Valve’s future projects and obviously, about Gabe Newell himself. Topics include Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Steam, Linux ports and even Mario 64, which seems to be Gabe’s favorite non-Valve game. As for his favorite Valve title, it’s Dota 2, and he’s pushing around 20 hours of it every week. Of course, you can see all the questions and answers on Reddit. Were you hoping for a Half Life 3 announcement in last week’s AMA with Mr. Newel?
