Hearthstone’s Success “far exceeded” Blizzard’s Expectations

Hearthstone may be the only thing a lot of people have in common with World of Warcraft, but Blizzard didn’t think that would be the case.

First of all, if you haven’t checked out Hearthstone, clear some time up this Weekend and give it a go. I hate trading card games and I still think it’s fantastic.

Second of all, your doing so will put you among the staggering 20 million Hearthstone players worldwide. To put that into perspective, League of Legends had to wait for years before hitting its 27 million player mark, whereas Hearthstone grew to 20 million in about a quarter of that time at most.

Activision CFO Dennis Durkin chalks it up to “strong engagement and monetization”, which is a lot like complimenting a painting by saying its composition is exquisite and its subject isn’t hideous enough to scare away the kids.

“Similar to our other franchises, the key to ongoing engagement in Hearthstone is new content… and our developers are already working on a full expansion that will include over 100 new cards. It’s an exciting time to be a Blizzard gamer, and we look forward to celebrating with our players this Friday at BlizzCon.” -Mike Morhaime

I’d think it’s a more exciting time to be a Blizzard Stockholder, but hey, one man’s crappy Goldshire Footman is another man’s game changer.
