For fiscal year 2013, Apple sold 26 million units of the iconic iPod, a figure so low that the last time they sold less than 30 million units was in 2005. The obvious decline of the iPods popularity in the market though was expected by Apple.
The iPhone and now the iPad are both cannibalizing the sales of the iPod. Both devices can offer what the iPod can and more. In fact, the late Steve Jobs remarked in 2007 that “the iPhone is the best iPod we’ve ever made”.
Last year, the only move by Apple to stop the bleeding of their iPod line was to release a new version of the iPod Touch. It is too early to say where the iPod is going but if no major changes is made to the media player line, we could be bidding it farewell soon.
