The Rich Kids of Tehran page on Instagram has been blocked by Iran Authorities according to Mashable. This page features one side of the youth’s lifestyle in the country, most preferably the youth in a high social status. The Rich Kids of Tehran profile showed different photos of how luxurious and elegant their lifestyle is. The Instagram page was made in September of the current year. This page has more than 90,000 followers, making it visible to a lot of people using Instagram. So the probabilities of having the page being reviewed and accessed by different people in the world with Instagram profiles were all possible.
This page seems to be controversial, as it only features one side of the youth’s way of living. By having this page in public, Instagram users who will be able to access it will eventually have these experiences as one of their dreams to achieve. Instagram is relatively known as one of the most popular social media sites not just in Iran, but into the entire world. This makes it possible for other groups to compel and question the images on the website like the “Poor Kids of Iran” page, which was created and featured the less fortunate youth. Controversies arise as these two pages were now compared as two faces of Iran.
The Rich Kids of Tehran page also featured pictures that were known to be illegal in Iran. These pictures include women drinking alcohol and not wearing their headscarves, which are one of the most important rules this country abides as a respect for their values. Iran was known by its rich culture, and not following these rules makes the Iranian authorities to decide on having it banned and blocked.
The Instagram page also featured young adults that are part of Iran’s elite class. They were less restricted when it comes to the laws this country imposes for their values and attires. But this does not help much as Iran imposed strict compliance and stand on the issue. As Instagram can be publicly accessed, this gives a big trouble to the people featured and have them exposed to the authorities. A group of Iranians were arrested by authorities because of dancing to the hit song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. This already shows how Iran takes a stand in these types of issues. Now, Instagram is just one of the few social media sites that are allowed in Iran. Most common social media sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter were being blocked officially by Iran.
