Is the Bioshock Movie in Development?

Ken Levine, Bioshock Movie, Sony Pictures

Like the big screen Halo adaptation, the Bioshock movie has been rumored to be back in development since its cancellation in 2008. But Kotaku has just reported that Sony Pictures has registered several domain names that imply the development of a new adaptation: bioshock-movie.com, bioshock-movie.net, and bio-shock.net. Also, Kotaku speculates that Ken Levine, Irrational Games’ co-founder, could be penning the latest attempt to bring Bioshock to the big screen: he worked on the latest draft of Logan’s Run and he entertained the idea of returning to the Bioshock movie during his time off.

Could Ken Levine be penning the alleged Bioshock movie?

Ken Levine was the person who killed the initial project in the late 2000s, which was originally being produced by Universal Pictures: the co-founder stated “Take-Two is one of those companies that gives a lot of trust to their creative people, and so they said to me, ‘If you want to kill it Ken, kill it.’ And I killed it.” Problems arose with the initial Bioshock movie when Gore Verbinski, the director of the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, dropped out. The director later stated that his depature was the result of a ballooning budget, a rumored $160 million, and its hard R rating: “I couldn’t really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an ‘R’ rating…It’s a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the price tag is high. We just didn’t have any takers on an ‘R’-rated movie with that price tag.”

And as a result of Verbinski’s departure, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the director of 28 Weeks Later, became attached to the project. However, the fact that the director was not an ideal match was one of the main factors that led to Levine halting the production. And until now, there has been virtually no news about the Bioshock movie; but while the registered domain names establish a possibility, the likelihood that we will see the film soon is slim. Also, it is important to point out that Sony Pictures has been attached to various video game adaptations including Watch Dogs, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, Sonic, and Raving Rabbids: so it is impossible to know which of these projects will actually be made.

So what do you think of these rumors? Do you think a Bioshock movie will get made? Is the domain name any indication of the project’s progression?
