Riot Games’ senior sound designer Adam Swanson took to the official League of Legends forums a over the weekend to discuss what’ll be happening with the game’s audio in future patches.
Essentially, Riot Games will be transitioning to a new to audio engine to control the game’s voices, music and sound effects. Though the full transition itself is still a fair few patches away, Swanson saw it fair to inform League of Legends players nonetheless about what’s currently being planned and what they should expect once the transition is complete.
“Back in the Patch 4.7 Notes,” Swanson began, “we mentioned a new audio engine is coming your way. Basically, we’re transitioning over to a new tool to control the voices, music and sound effects in League of Legends. We’re still a few patches away from switching over, but since we’ll be shipping files out over the next few releases, we wanted to let you know what to expect once the new engine is activated.
When we move to the new engine,” he continued, “there’ll be subtle clarity improvements to the in-game sounds, proper support for Surround Sound and adjustments to how we implement stereo panning/imaging. You may also see slight performance gains with memory management.
The biggest gains will come further down the road: our new engine opens the door for us to explore more ideas for how we create and use sound effects, voices and music in League of Legends, allowing us to create a more expansive and immersive experience,” he added. “We’ve grown a lot the past few years and hope to be playing League of Legends many more years from now. This change makes our game more scalable for the long term.“
League of Legend’s 4.7 Patch also brought with it the introduction of the new Support-Tank champion Braum, who was added into the game a few days after the patch released. Braum was initially teased in mid-April in a animation short about a poro looking for a snack.
The patch also updated the default model the the champion Twitch, and saw to update Rengar, Rumble and Kassadin, too. Furthermore, League of Legends’ Tribunal system will also be receiving an upgrade, too.
