As I reported in an earlier article, the 2014 Pokemon World Championships are taking place this weekend in Washington D.C. and being streamed on Twitch.tv all throughout this weekend (August 16-17, 2014, for when this article becomes obsolete). Here, players of the Pokemon TCG and Pokemon X and Y games gather to share stories, smack talk, and unlike real athletes, NOT cheat on their women with supermodels and adult film stars.
There has been more work put into the World Championships this year than ever before, no doubt in part because of the upcoming Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire games releasing in the near future. While the main attraction may be the tournament itself, a new trailer for the Mega Evolution of Slowbro in Pokemon OR/AS stole the show this morning.
POKEMON: OMEGA RUBY/ALPHA SAPPHIRE MEGA SLOWBRO REVEAL TRAILER
With all of the Mega Evolutions leaked and advertised in the last few days, I could make a joke about Slowbro coming late to the party, but I’m sure some neckbeard on Reddit beat me to it.
Mega Slowbro, according to The Official Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby website, will remain a water and psychic type, upon mega evolution. It gathers energy into the Pokemon that perpetually gnaws at his tender flesh, Shellder, causing it to grow in size and ruthlessness, quickly becoming large enough to clamp onto the poor creature’s neck and engulfing his body.
This metaphor for the self-destructive nature of the human species receives a boost in both its Defense and Sp. Defense stats, as well as the ability Shell Armor, which means that no Pokemon can land a critical hit on Mega Slowbro. I can only assume this is because the Pokemon lives in such continuous agony that it loses the ability to feel pain.
Pokemon: Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire will release on November 21st, 2014, for the 3DS, and the 2014 Pokemon World Championships roll on throughout the weekend. Once again, best of luck to all the competitors, TCG or otherwise!
