Exciting news related to the development of Hideo Kojima’s latest and greatest entry into the Metal Gear Solid series has officially arrived. Footage of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain‘s multiplayer mode has become publicly available online (courtesy of IGN). There had been a previous video leak, which was subsequently taken down. You can find more information on that here.

A video, debuted at this year’s GamesCom behind closed doors, has been revealed to the masses showcasing footage of the The Phantom Pain‘s multiplayer mode. The 22-minute long video demonstrates gameplay from both the single-player and multiplayer components of the game, and shows off a variety of new game mechanics. You can see for yourself at the link below.

The developer-commented footage shows the player controlling Snake being tasked with infiltrating an opposing player’s Mother Base (which the player can customize and upgrade with various resources). The video also shows off various new gameplay methods available to the player.

Highlights of the video include:

  • Players can install gun cameras, infrared lasers, and other weapons to prevent other players from successfully infiltrating their Mother Base
  • Soldiers, weapons, and supplies can be looted from the opposing player’s base to boost one’s own resources
  • The Fulton surface-to-air Recovery System can be utilized as a way to traverse the base
  • Players can be detected by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Conversely, players can install UAV’s of their own to detect possible intruders
  • The possibility of player vs. player multiplayer modes, due to the fact that both players encounter each other just before the video ends

The Metal Gear Solid franchise is no stranger to online multiplayer, with the PlayStation 3’s Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots containing the excellent Metal Gear Online (released later as a standalone multiplayer game).

The Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain‘s multiplayer mode in the video appears to be a more focused, strategic experience with an emphasis on base defense, customization, and resource mining. The Metal Gear Solid series typically concentrates on the story and gameplay experience over multiplayer. But if MGSVs multiplayer offerings can stand tall alongside its single-player content, gamers may be in for a truly epic experience. To date, the game does not have an official release date. However, gamers can expect some news in the soon due to the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September.

What’s your opinion on multiplayer in a Metal Gear Solid game? Would you prefer for Kojima to focus more on the single-player aspects of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain?
