Minecraft is still selling incredibly well on every platform it comes to, the latest achievement for Mojang’s sandbox style crafting game being the fact that it has reached 12 million copies sold on the Xbox 360. Microsoft announced the news today on the Xbox Wire, Microsoft’s official news outlet. The 12 million sales figure includes combined numbers from both the physical and digital copies of the game.
Previous Xbox 360 sales for Minecraft were at 10 million in December. This is an increase of over 2 million sales in only four months for the two year old version of Minecraft’s PC counterpart. Speaking of PC, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is getting close to surpassing the original PC version of the block based game. Minecraft for PC sits at 15 million copies sold, only 3 million away from the 360 edition which has been available for three years less than the PC version. It is clear that Minecraft is not losing steam all these years later and is definitely here to stay.
Mojang continues to support Minecraft with regular updates and downloadable content packs. So far we have seen Skyrim and Mass Effect mash-up packs and a Marvel Avengers skin pack. The next big update for the game will be the Candy Texture Pack which releases April 18th. In an interview with Xbox Wire, business developer Daniel Kaplan said that the team is “looking forward to creating mashups with other games” for future packs. Kaplan also exprest in the interview that these sales figures are larger then he ever expected.”I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1 million copies,” he said. “That would have put us on par with BF1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for. We never even dreamed of selling 12 million!”
Minecraft recently launched on PS3 and is also going strong on iOS and Andriod. An Xbox One edition has been talked about at Mojang as “Coming Soon” with PS4 and Vita entries not far behind.
