The hugely popular Minecraft has been a phenomenon since it came out on the PC in 2009. The Swedish developer Mojang had no idea that the game would bridge the gap between commercial and indie games. Back in February Minecraft broke 14 million copies on the PC, while it sold a million copies on the Playstation 3 and another 10 million on the Xbox 360. Last the mobile version sold a whopping 10 million copies; and these numbers do not even include the next generation consoles.
Obviously this means that Mojang is in a financially safe place; it is reported that the company made an amazing 2.07 billion Swedish krona or $326 million in 2013. This 2.07 billion is an increase from the 816 million krona made in 2012. Now, of that 2.07 billion krona only 816 million krona or $128 million is considered profit: another 821 million krona pays licensing fees to a company owned by Mojang co-creator Marcus “notch” Persson.
Now, how much of this money comes from Minecraft sales: over 90 percent of it. According to the Wall Street Journal Reports roughly 38 percent of the revenue came from the PC version, while another 30 percent came from the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions. On top of that, the mobile platforms, raked in a whopping 25 percent. Now, the rest of revenue came from Minecraft merchandising, as well as, the popular card game Scrolls.
After these financial reports, GameSpot asked Mojang Chief Executive Carl Manneh what is next for the Swedish powerhouse: “Financially speaking, we have no pressure whatsoever to rush into any new projects. Besides, we have no outside owners that require us to reach any particular goals.”
