As previously reported, Naughty Dog, developer of the PlayStation exclusive Uncharted franchise, has released an artbook, The Art of Naughty Dog.
The artbook in question compiles various concept, design, environment (et cetera) art from various Naughty Dog games in celebration of the studio’s 30th anniversary.
Interestingly enough, The Art of Naughty Dog has more than a few surprises for fans of the studio’s older games, the Jak and Daxter series to be exact. Naughty Dog apparently had plans to develop another Jak and Daxter game, presumable entitled Jak 4 or Jak and Daxter 4. The reason for its canning is unknown at this time.
Fortunately, someone who attended Naughty Dog’s 30th anniversary celebration snapped a few photographs. He or she subsequently leaked the images and scans online of concept art revealing Naughty Dog’s character design for both Jak and Daxter, alongside environmental concept art for the next-gen iteration of the Jak and Daxter series that everyone wanted, but nobody got.

The above images are both a blessing and a curse to Jak and Daxter fans since they are bittersweet reminders of the current-generation Jak game that could have been, but never was.
It is interesting to note that it seems Naughty Dog approached the possibility of Jak and Daxter 4 with a grittier, more realistic tone, not unlike like the transition from the studio’s light-hearted Uncharted romps to the grim, unforgiving The Last of Us.
As for the possibility of a current-gen Jak and Daxter game, anything is pure speculation. But hey, gamers can dream, right?
What are your thoughts on the concept art from Naughty Dog’s planned Jak and Daxter game? Are you disappointed that it never came into fruition, or do you think it was better that the studio moved on? Why or why not? What would you like to have seen from the game?
