Neil Druckmann, writer for The Last of Us’ film adaptation, reveals more information on the script for the upcoming movie. In a recent interview, creative director for The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, discussed some of the changes he has made to story of The Last of Us for the script of the film adaptation. In regards to adapting a story for a game to a movie, Druckmann said the following:

“In two hours you can’t tell the same kind of story that you can in a game like The Last of Us, which is 15 hours…I’m in the middle of it now, and it’s been super difficult because there’s so much that happens in The Last of Us — even just in the cinematics — that can’t fit in a film, let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue.”

On the subject of Joel and Ellie‘s relationship, Druckmann confirms that it’s still a major focus of the story:

“It almost has this novel quality as far as how much content there is…And a film works really well when it’s laser-focused, so the first part of it was like: well, what is this story really about? It’s clearly about Joel and Ellie. What are the most important beats that we can’t lose? Start with those, and cut everything else out.”

The film version of The Last of Us was announced earlier this year following the success of the video game’s release, and following the announcement was confirmation that Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi would be producing the film adaptation. While the film has no release date as of yet, details on the film’s pre-production were released during Comic-Con last month, including possible casting choices.
