New software update for the Playstation 4 brings wireless headset support

by GH Staff

In preparation for the arrival of the Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0, Sony is updating the software on the Playstation 4. The 1.60 software update will make the Playstation 4 compatible with the new Wireless Stereo Headest 2.0 (launching on the 10th of February), as well as the previous PULSE Wireless Headset.

What’s the Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0, you wonder? Well, it’s Sony’s new entry in the console headset market, and it’s one stunningly good looking headset, if you ask me. Besides being pretty, this new headset designed for the Playstation 4 features 7.1 virtual surround sound, and a crystal-clear internal microphone with noise-cancelling, specifically designed for online play. It has a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 8 hours, and is compatible with the older Playstation 3, the new Playstation 4, as well as your PC or Mac, since it uses a USB wireless adaptor. It’s also foldable, which means storage is convenient.

But the headset isn’t the only thing coming with the new update. A free app will also be released soon, and it will be named the Headset Companion App. It basically manages sound modes, tuning in-game sounds to perfection for all the major Playstation 4 releases. The first example of such a specifically tuned sound mode will be released in InFamous: Second Son, developed by Sucker Punch. The app will feature presets for movies, games and music, and will allow you to customize specific equalizer modes and save them. It will also be compatible with both the new 2.0 headset, and the older PULSE headset.

PS4 Headset

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with this news, as the new Sony headset seems to complete the Playstation 4 perfectly. It looks comfortable enough, and the design is certainly an upgrade from the previous model. The headset will be available for €79.99, which is not exactly cheap, but not entirely expensive either. A more exact value for the buck can be established later on, when the headset can be tested and reviewed properly. Given that 7.1 surround headsets aren’t particularly cheap, especially in the case of wireless ones, this one seems to be priced fairly, and the PC/MAC support is an added plus. It can even be used with the Vita or mobile devices through a 3.5mm jack connection, which only adds to its value.

What do you think? Worth picking up?
