It’s finally happening. A brand new Tony Hawk game has been confirmed and it will be coming to consoles at some point in 2015. The announcement was made by Tony Hawk himself on Twitter and then confirmed by Activison when speaking to Polygon.

The last main series game in the Tony Hawk franchise released was Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground in 2007. Developed by Neversoft, Proving Ground was Neversoft’s last ever Tony Hawk game. The last Tony Hawk game to release on console was a spin off game called Tony Hawk Shred in 2010, developed by Robomodo after original developers Neversoft were sent to work on other projects, mainly the Guitar Hero and Call of Duty series. Tony Hawk Shred sold incredibly poorly and the series was put on hold until the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD in 2012. Tony Hawk Shred was infamous for including a skateboarding peripheral, the game cost a lot of money and was very difficult to control. Shred was slammed by critics for poor controls and an expensive buy in price. Tony Hawk Shred sold a measly 3000 units in its first week of sale in the United States.

Let’s hope that with this upcoming Tony Hawk game Activision learnt their lesson and will stay away from pointless expensive peripherals. It’s been seven long years since a Tony Hawk game released that you can play with your controller, and with the Skating genre being practically empty right now, Activision can once again make this genre theirs with a strong release from the Tony Hawk franchise.

The developers of the new game are currently unknown, but it is most likely to be Robomodo as they have developed the last three games, and with Neversoft now closed, it will be Robomodo or a brand new company.
