Nintendo 3DS Gets Android Tethering In Japan

by GH Staff
Nintendo is bringing Android-tethering to the 3DS in Japan.

Several features of the Nintendo 3DS and more recent 2DS require a consistant internet connection in order to function properly. If users have a 3DS that’s connected to a wireless network, the handheld console is capable of performing system updates, users can access the eShop, and basically do anything else you could think of. While owners have been able to surf the web from their Nintendo handheld, the 3DS can now stream video from not just Netflix, but YouTube and Hulu as well. All of these extra services are nice, but Wi-Fi hotspots aren’t always available. Fortunately for Japanese 3DS owners, Nintendo has a work-around for these situations.

On May 15, Nintendo and 3G mobile service DoCoMo will launch Easy Tethering for Android-based smartphones and tablets. The Japanese region-exclusive app allows Android users to tether their phone or tablet with a Nintendo 3DS to use as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Available through the Google Play store, Easy Tethering uses WPS protocols for the connection, and will support the following devices at launch:

Phones:

  • Galaxy S5 SC-04F
  • Xperia ™ Z2 SO-03F
  • Xperia ™ A2 SO-04F
  • AQUOS ZETA SH-04F
  • ARROWS NX F-05F

Tablets:

  • AQUOS PAD SH-06F
  • Xperia ™ Z2 Tablet SO-05F

Currently, Nintendo has not announced plans for bringing any kind of tethering service to the rest of the world. Localization of Easy Tethering or any variation of the app shouldn’t be ruled out, as the gaming giant has stated that they are expanding their consumer focus to feature more real-world hardware applications. It’s also possible that this partnership with DoCoMo for Android-tethering may be in preparation for the surge of online activity expected with the launch of Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS.

Those who use Easy Tethering and complete an online survey before Sept. 30 will also get entered for a chance to win a free game from the 3DS Virtual Console library.
