Nintendo have announced that they will be hosting the first ever Super Smash Bros. 4 for 3DS tournament at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con on July 25th. Reportedly tournament slots are limited and participants will be able to sign up on the day of the event at a first come, first serve basis.
After an overwhelmingly positive reception to the Smash Bros invitational at E3, Nintedo of America are obviously keen to continue their courtship of the competitive community. This tournament will be the first time the finished game will be shown in a competitive environment and for those unable to attend the whole thing will be streamed on Nintendo’s Twitch channel.
With Super Smash Bros. Melee gracing the halls of premier fighting game tournament Evolution 2014 this weekend, for the second consecutive year, it is clear that competitive Smash has made leaps and bounds in terms of popularity in recent times. Clearly Nintendo has decided that the competitive market has gone untapped for too long and are making steps to improve their relations with a community Masahiro Sakurai once called ‘maniacs’.
