This past year, Nintendo decided to forgo the traditional E3 stage presentation, in exchange for a special edition of Nintendo Direct. The digital presentation was broadcast to millions of viewers across the online Nintendo Direct archive, the Wii U, Wii and Nintendo 3DS. For the second time, Nintendo will not be giving a formal stage presentation this year for E3 2014. However, the gaming giant will still have a presence at E3, between their usual booths and a Super Smash Bros. tournament.
In the past, Nintendo has included lengthy, in-depth developer discussions and round-table style presentations regarding the company’s vision for gaming, and projects that are currently in-development. These discussions are often held separately from the actual E3 presentation, and are unfortunately kept private and never broadcast online by Nintendo. In the past, developer discussions have featured a question-and-answer session with Shigeru Miyamoto, and have been the medium for reveals such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Pikmin 3, the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo 3DS.
Currently, Nintendo has two developer conferences planned for E3 2014. The first of which will be hosted by Game Director Masahiro Sakurai, and will revolve around the upcoming Super Smash Bros. titles for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The second discussion will be in regards to a new IP coming to the 3DS. Both events are invitation-only, meaning select members of the press and Nintendo investors will be chosen to sit in for both discussions. The Smash Bros. conference is scheduled for June 10 from 10-11:30pm ET, with the one regarding the new IP set for June 11 from 9-10:30pm ET.
While there’s no information regarding just what game the second conference will be about, fans have already begun speculating about Nintendo’s mystery title. Could it be the new project that Miyamoto has been working on? Or perhaps is it the game Retro Studios has been developing behind closed doors? With the recent pseudo-updates to classic SNES titles- being The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Kirby Triple Deluxe and Yoshi’s New Island- is there a possibility that fans might finally get a 3D F-Zero, or even an updated Super Metroid? Leave your thoughts below, and tell us what you want Nintendo’s mystery 3DS game to be!
