Above you will see the first of three images released regarding a new Nintendo patent. This new device appears to be capable of switching controls as the user would like. In the image above you can see the D-Pad being swapped for another control scheme. This information first appeared on NeoGAF where you can see the entire patent laid out. Here is a brief description of the first figure:

“An information processing device such as a game machine or a mobile phone is provided with an operation unit with one or more buttons, switches or the like for accepting operation by a user. A game machine, for example, is provided with a cross key, an analog stick, an operational push button or the like, to accept operation concerning a movement or an action of a character in a game, or operation concerning various games such as operation for selecting a menu. Furthermore, a mobile phone is, for example, provided with an operational push button on which a number, a letter or the like is written, and with a directional key or an analog stick for, e.g., four or eight directions, to accept operation concerning speaking, electronic mail transmission/reception or the like.”

What interests me most about this is figuring out what it would apply to. The device pictured looks very similar to the Wii U GamePad, so it’s very possible we could be looking at a new edition of that. However it’s also too soon to rule out the possibility of a new portable gaming device as well. It’s highly unlikely that it is a new portable gaming device since the 3DS is still dominating the handheld market and has plenty of support.

We’ll have to keep a close eye out for a special announcement regarding this new Nintendo Patent. E3 is just around the corner so it’s very likely we could see some new hardware from Nintendo in the coming months! W e will keep you posted on the latest news regarding this special Nintendo patent in the coming weeks.
