No Chance for Demon’s Souls 2

With the impending release of Dark Souls II, many fans have been asking about a sequel to 2009s Demon’s Souls. The 2009 action role-playing game was a Playstation 3 exclusive. It became notorious for its extremely high difficulty level and is considered the spiritual predecessor to the original Dark Souls: From Software developed both games.

Recently, fans on the Playstation blog were able to ask John Hardin some questions: he is the Public Relations manager of Atlus, the publisher of the original Demon’s Souls game. One question that was consistently asked was will there be a Demon’s Souls 2 for the Playstation 4? John Hardin quickly responded to the pleas of the fans with a disheartening answer: “can 100% confirm there will NOT be a Demon’s Souls 2. :(“

If the frowning emoticon was not sad enough, John Hardin then talked about the reason why Demon’s Souls 2 will not happen: “That’s Sony’s call. From what I’ve heard around the Internet, Demon’s Souls is one big Gordian knot.” Soon after, Hardin emailed GameSpot to clarify his original comments, but he basically just reiterated what he said: “While I guess *technically* it’s not impossible, since Sony JP owns the IP (Intellectual Property), I don’t want anyone to get their hopes up.”

So to all the Demon’s Souls fans, it is highly unlikely that there will be a true sequel on the Playstation 4. This definitely has to do with Sony JP owning the IP and the risk of distributing a console exclusive game. These days exclusives that do not break over a million units sold lose money. Now even though Demon’s Souls sold more copies than Dark Souls on the Playstation 3, Dark Souls was a bigger success because it was playable on multiple platforms.

So instead, Demon’s Souls fans are stuck with the spiritual successor series Dark Souls. The original is still available on the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360; but the sequel Dark Souls II will be available on March 11th for the Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.
