Want to play old Sega games on the Wii U? Sorry folks, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
Destructoid reports that based on Sega producer Yosuke Okunari’s Twitter account, there are no plans to release any Sega classics on the Wii U’s virtual console.
When asked why Sega favorites haven’t yet made their way over to Wii U, producer Yosuke Okunari simply replied “there is no such plan.” The publisher has been hard at work making 3DS Classics like madmen, but the Wii U side seems to be left in the cold for now.
Okunari notes that you should pester Sega West if you want Virtual Console games.
Seems strange that Sega isn’t having any games on the Wii U. There are currently 73 Genesis titles and 15 Master System titles on the Wii. After a hiatus in 2011, the Genesis had three titles released on the system — Strider, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, and Monster World IV.
Two games were taken off the list — Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure and Shanghai II: Dragon’s Eye — at the turn of this year. According to GoNintendo, those were taken down due to licenses expiring. Same thing happened with Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s DLC.
With no more titles coming on the Wii, it’s a bummer to not see it continue on the Wii U, especially with how close Nintendo and Sega have been.
