Nvidia’s Tegra K1 and Unreal Engine 4 – The future of mobile gaming

by GH Staff

Just a few days into the new year, the CES is already highlighting the fact that 2014 will be a great year for gaming indeed. Nvidia is starting the year in full strength, showing off it’s newest Tegra K1 Kepler graphics chip, a chip that represents a huge leap in terms of what mobile gaming can and will represent.

In the newest demonstrations, Nvidia officials have teamed up with the guys behind the Unreal Engine 4 to show what mobile gaming really can be capable of. And it really does seem that the gap between personal computer gaming and mobile gaming is diminishing rapidly. Revealing the Tegra K1, a 192-core chip capable of mind-blowing performances, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang stated that the newest mobile chipset is “the most successful architecture” Nvidia has ever created.

The Tegra K1 will support all major PC gaming technologies, such as DX11, Open GL 4.4, post processing or tessellation. Two version of the chip will eventually become available – a 32 and a 64 bit version, all for a stunning 5W power usage. This emphasis on mobile gaming and computing shows that Nvidia is acknowledging the fact that the PC industry is diminishing rapidly and is preparing for a future business plan that has a stronger focus on mobile platforms.

And, to demonstrate the capabilities of their newest technology, Nvidia employed the services of the Unreal Engine 4, showing off some impressive light effects, living room rendering as well as some impressive texture and shadow details.
