The film adaptation of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed has received an official release date, 20th Century Fox has confirmed.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the untitled Assassin’s Creed film is slated to hit cinemas on December 21st, 2016.

Additionally, the movie will have fierce competition at the box office during its opening release, considering an unnamed Illumination Entertainment project launches in the same week and the first Star Wars spin-off movie will be released in the following week.

Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave & X-Men: Days of Future Past) has been attached to the project since 2012 and is set to play the lead role in the movie — rumoured to be assuming the character of Desmond Miles from Ubisoft’s popular gaming series — while Australian film director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) is at the helm of the project.

Last year, Fassbender spoke about his involvement in the Assassin’s Creed movie and said that they are “spoiled for choice” when it comes to selecting the material they want to use from the gaming franchise.

Publisher Ubisoft suffered a massive leak at the end of 2014 regarding news that Ubisoft Quebec is currently in development on the eighth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, called “Assassin’s Creed Victory,” which takes place in the Victorian era and is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2015.
