As if the indie horror title Outlast wasn’t enough to scare the pants off even the most seasoned horror gamer. Now fans will be able to relive the experience when DLC content for the first-person terror-fest becomes available for download on May 6th. Titled Outlast: Whistleblower, players will take on the role of Waylon Park, the man who tipped off the original game’s protagonist – Miles Upshur – about the goings on in Mount Massive Asylum.
Available for the PC and Playstation 4 (though European PS4 owners will have to wait until the following day), Whistleblower follows the tribulations of Park, a software engineer hired by the asylum, as he learns about the horrific incidents that are taking place.
While the premise marks the DLC as a prequel, other elements of the game will have the story skipping around in time and covering other events in the mental hospital. The idea seems to indicate that Whistleblower will tie both stories together, as the two timelines coincide with each other. This is, of course, speculation at this point and fans of the game will have to wait until May to see for themselves.
Outlast was released on 4th September 2013 and was met with positive responses. Developed by game designer experts responsible for such AAA titles as Assassin’s Creed and Uncharteed, the game infused graphical prowess with terrifying horror gameplay. PC gaming website, Rock, Paper, Shotgun, described Outlast as, “not an experiment in how games can be scary,” but rather holding it up as an example of how horror games should be done.
Much like Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast has become one of those horrifying titles that have warranted video after video of Youtube enthusiasts showing the world their on-screen reaction. Will Whistleblower create another flood of uploads depicting gamers’ horrified screams? One can only hope.
