Pentax was founded in 1919 in Otsuka, Tokyo. Originally it was known as Asahi Optical Joint Stock Company and from that point they manufactured lenses for eyeglasses. Over time, technology and manufacturing processes used to manufacture lenses were adapted towards successfully producing camera lenses, binoculars, and projection lenses. Throughout all these years, Pentax stayed linked to their original philosophy and they kept doing what others have never done. In 2011 Pentax was a part of a merger, being succeeded into Pentax Ricoh Imaging Company. Key people of this new venture are Fumio Urano (president and CEO) and Ganesh Ramaswamy.
SLR cameras can rarely be found these days due to the dominance of digital SLR (DSLR) cameras, for all the right reasons. The SLR is basically an analogue predecessor of said digital camera, having a single reflective lens which directs optical data onto the film, rather than digital chips. Because of this, SLR cameras are limited in terms of the number of photos which can be stored at any given time, they cannot be deleted, and the film cannot be reused. SLR cameras also have a viewfinder, but due to the medium which represents the core of the camera it is not as sought after as it used to be.
