Playstation 4 update to add video sharing and the ability to turn of HDCP

One of the strengths of the Xbox One over the Playstation 4 is Microsoft’s stronger support for video streaming content. Sony’s lack of support for such content has earned it some some criticism from gamers and journalists, but it looks like Sony is trying to change that with the next PlayStation 4 update which was announced on the Playstation blog earlier today.

The upcoming Playstation 4 update will include new video editing software which will make it easier for users to edit their clips. Another widely requested feature among fans is the ability to save videos and screenshots to an external flash drive.  However, perhaps the most important part of this upcoming patch is the ability to turn off the HDCP protections. These protections make it difficult for gamers and journalists to share their videos on Youtube and while there are ways to get around the restriction it is good to see that Sony is simply adding an option to disable HDCP all together.

Sony also announced that, as part of a separate update, they are working with Twitch and Ustream so that future Twitch streams can be archived and viewed in 720p resolution.
