Right on schedule, Sony has revealed its complimentary PlayStation Plus titles for July 2014! As part of the new format of Plus, six titles will become available (2 each for PS3, PS4, and Vita) at once, and can be added to your download list till the end of July. Once the month is over, all of the games will be gone forever! You can of course still download them through your list, but new subscribers won’t be able to get them. With that dirty laundry out of the way, let’s get to the news you’ve all been waiting for: here are the games for July 2014!
PS4
Towerfall Ascension [87 Metascore]: Towerfall was originally an Ouya exclusive, but it found its way to PC and PS4 a few months ago. In some ways, Ascension plays a bit like a retro Super Smash Bros. Up to four brawlers enter the ring, and your only source of attack is a limited quiver of arrows. Victory is earned by being conservative with your ammo or by swiping it from enemies!
Strider! [78 Metascore]: Strider is a futuristic hack and slash fighter with plenty of flashy animations and flamboyant colors. As the game progresses, your Strider agent gains a myriad of upgrades including weapons and other mechanics that help take down enemies. Fans of twitch-based gameplay that don’t mind backtracking might enjoy this experience.
PS3
Dead Space 3 [78 Metascore]: One of the most controversial games of the last few years. The third entry to the DS catalog marks a risky departure from the series’ survival horror roots, and its developers at Visceral Games have been punished dearly for that. The inclusion of microtransactions also hurt the popularity of this title, but otherwise, plenty of advanced weaponry and scary monsters should keep you shooting like crazy for more than a few hours.
Vessel [81 Metascore]: Vessel is a 2D puzzle platformer featuring an inventor by the name of Arkwright. On a quest to create the ultimate invention, this intelligent protagonist must make his way through areas using water physics and other handy objects he makes along the way. The game itself is actually a few years old by now, but if you haven’t played, Vessel should be a lot of fun.
PS Vita
Doki-Doki Universe [71 Metascore] As a confused robot named QT3, you must travel to different planets to help strange characters in need. The basic tenor of the game is a litany of ten-hour side quests in which you obtain items upon competition. These items can then be used to satisfy the needs of those you meet along your journey. There’s also a choice-driven feature that attempts to understand how you as play as an individual. Thankfully, Universe supports cross-buy on all three platforms.
Muramasa Rebirth [78 Metascore]: This is an HD remake of Muramasa: The Demon Blade for Wii. For those that haven’t played, it’s an action RPG that focuses on twitch mechanics and combat above all else. Even though Rebirth is set in seventeenth century Japan, this title was heralded for its brilliantly flashy visuals. At one time, Muramasa Rebirth was actually called “Vita’s best game” by IGN.
