The PlayStation Vita isn’t for sale at many big retail stores. Does that mean Sony’s handheld is finally crashing into the grave or is there just a hardware shortage?
Many reports floated across the internet today noting that none of the Vita models are on sale directly from Walmart, Target, GameStop, or even Amazon (just third-party retailers that have jacked up the price).
Polygon finally got ahold of a Sony representative to confirm that a supply shortage was indeed the case.
“We’re seeing healthy consumer demand for PS Vita globally, particularly in markets like Japan,” the representative said. “The U.S. launch of the slimmer and lighter PS Vita has generated strong interest among gamers, and we’re working to replenish supply here to ensure continued momentum leading into the holidays.”
That’s some great news for the handheld device that’s had a rough first half in 2014. 10,000 units were moved according to the March NPD numbers, the Borderlands 2 port was met with lukewarm reviews, and Sony damn near dismissed the Vita entirely in their E3 presentation.
Let’s hope the Vita can have a successful enough holiday that third-party publishers will start to give it another chance.
