Risen 2 has come and gone, and if it’s remembered for one thing, it’s for how badly it butchered the first Risen and well, how bad it was overall. Despite that, I can’t help but be curious about what Risen 3: Titan Lords manages to do with the series. Just like the Gothic series (the spiritual prequel to the Risen series), the game has its ups and downs. Following that logic, Risen 3 could be great. We’ll find out when Deep Silver’s game lands on the 12th of August.
Deep Silver promises that Risen 3: Titan Lords will offer players quite the challenge. The pirate elements are not entirely gone, but the game will take a more serious turn and will reintroduce heavy spellcasting, as seen in the game’s CGI trailer. Besides bringing new areas ready for exploring, the game will first and foremost focus on a new combat system, one that promises to be far superior to what we’ve previously seen. We’ve heard that before, and while most players loved the combat of some Gothic or Risen titles, the developers never managed to hit the nail completely on the head. Let’s hope for the best.
Besides the presence of magic being reinstated, Risen 3 will feature 3 factions (or guilds, if you may) that the player can form an alliance with. This smells extremely Gothic-like, but that’s not a bad thing. I still have fond memories of the Old Camp (Guard Camp), New Camp (Mercenary Camp) and Swamp Camp (Templar Camp) of the original game. That worked out well in the past, so I see no reason why it can’t work out well once more. All-in-all, Risen 3 certainly has potential. It all depends on Deep Silver and the team’s ability to provide a quality experience. We’ll find out in August when the game will be launched for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
